The purpose of a triage nurse is to assess the medical needs of patients in an emergency room or other medical setting and assign them the appropriate level of care. Triage nurses must be able to quickly assess the urgency of a patient's condition and provide the necessary medical attention. They must also be able to communicate effectively with physicians, other medical staff, and patients in order to ensure that the patient is receiving the best possible care. As a triage nurse, one must have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Triage Nurse Summary
The Triage Nurse is responsible for providing initial assessment, triage, and treatment for patients in a healthcare setting. They will evaluate the patient’s condition, prioritize care needs, and refer patients to the appropriate health care professional. The Triage Nurse must be knowledgeable in basic medical assessment techniques and be able to rapidly assess and stabilize the patient. They must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and other healthcare staff. This position requires a current nursing license and may require completion of an accredited Triage Nurse program.
Triage Nurse Duties
- Greet patients and obtain patient information, medical history and insurance information
- Perform initial assessment of patient’s condition and determine priority of care needed
- Provide first aid when necessary and refer patients to appropriate medical personnel
- Keep records of patient’s health care evaluations, treatment plans and progress
- Contact patients to follow up on treatments or to obtain additional information
- Assist healthcare providers with patient care and educate patients on healthcare issues
