About the Shipfitter role
Shipfitters install and repair the structural components of ships, such as bulkheads, decks, and hulls. They weld, cut, and shape metal, use carbon arc and gas welding, and perform other related tasks.
Role Purpose
The purpose of a Shipfitter is to build, assemble, and repair parts of ships and other marine vessels. They use a variety of tools, including welding and cutting equipment, to cut and shape metal, install equipment, and make repairs. Shipfitters may also be responsible for inspecting and testing components, working with other trades such as welders, riggers, and machinists, and ensuring that safety standards and procedures are followed.

Shipfitter Duties
- Lay out and construct structural parts of ships, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, using jacks, turnbuckles, stays, wedges, chisels, and other tools and equipment
- Align parts in accordance with blueprints, sketches or oral instructions
- Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, according to blueprint specifications
- Cut and shape materials as specified
- Position and secure parts and assemblies, using jacks, turnbuckles, stays, wedges, and other tools and equipment
- Check and inspect all work for accuracy and conformance to specifications
Shipfitter Skills
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints
- Ability to fabricate, assemble, and install structural components
- Knowledge of welding and rigging
- Experience with grinding and finishing processes
