Periodontists specialize in preventive, diagnostic, and surgical procedures related to the periodontium, which includes the soft tissue, such as the gums, and the bones that support the teeth. They typically perform procedures such as root planing, osseous surgery, pocket reduction, gum grafting, and guided tissue regeneration. They are also responsible for educating patients on proper brushing and flossing techniques, and providing advice and guidance on diet, smoking, and general oral care.
