About the Perfusionist role

A Perfusionist is an allied health professional specialized in the operation of extracorporeal circulation (ECC) technology during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures. They are responsible for the set-up, operation, and maintenance of the ECC equipment during cardiac surgery, as well as monitoring and managing the patient's physiological parameters during CPB.

Role Purpose

The purpose of a Perfusionist is to operate extracorporeal circulation equipment to support or replace heart and lung functions during surgery. They perform a variety of tasks, including monitoring and adjusting equipment, managing blood products and medications, and ensuring the safety of the patient during the procedure. Perfusionists also provide guidance to surgeons and other healthcare professionals on the proper use of extracorporeal circulation equipment.

Perfusionist Job Summary A Perfusionist is a healthcare professional who specializes in the delivery and management of cardiopulmonary bypass for patients during open heart surgery. This individual works in collaboration with other members of the surgical team to ensure that the patient is receiving optimal care and that the patient’s heart and lungs are functioning properly during and following the surgery. Responsibilities include operating the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, monitoring the patient’s vital signs, and maintaining all clinical records. The Perfusionist must possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and must be able to work quickly and efficiently under pressure.

Perfusionist Duties

  • Administer and monitor life support systems during extracorporeal circulation and other cardiovascular procedures.
  • Evaluate patient's clinical status and make necessary adjustments to the procedure.
