About the Boiler Operator role

A Boiler Operator operates, maintains, and repairs boilers and auxiliary equipment in commercial, industrial, and/or institutional facilities. This includes monitoring boiler performance, conducting safety inspections and tests, and providing preventive maintenance. Boiler Operators must also be knowledgeable of applicable regulations and procedures.

Role Purpose

The purpose of a Boiler Operator is to safely operate and maintain steam boilers and auxiliary equipment to ensure that they meet the required standards of efficiency and safety. This includes conducting periodic tests, inspections, and adjustments to ensure that the boilers are operating properly, as well as monitoring and controlling fuel, water, and air supply to the boiler systems. Additionally, Boiler Operators are responsible for troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise, and for performing routine maintenance and repairs to equipment.

Boiler Operator Summary

The Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the boiler and auxiliary equipment. They will monitor and adjust the boiler's operating parameters, perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot any issues that may arise. They will also be tasked with ensuring the safe storage and handling of combustible and hazardous materials. The Boiler Operator must have a strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, boiler regulations and safety protocols. Additionally, they must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to work independently and with a team.

Boiler Operator Duties

  • Perform regular maintenance and inspections of boilers, steam lines, and related equipment
  • Adjust controls to generate specified electricity, steam, or heat
  • Monitor gauges, dials, and other indicators to make sure boiler is operating properly
  • Test boiler water for specific gravity and pH level
  • Monitor fuel consumption and adjust fuel flow as needed
  • Monitor and adjust combustion, air flow, and other processes as necessary
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repair work
