About the High School Guidance Counselor role
A High School Guidance Counselor provides support, advice, and resources to students to help them achieve academic, career, and personal success. They assist with college and career planning, offer social and emotional support, and develop student-centered plans to ensure individual needs are met.
Role Purpose
The primary purpose of a High School Guidance Counselor is to provide students with academic, emotional, and social support in order to help them reach their educational and career goals. This includes helping students identify their interests, strengths, and weaknesses; developing individualized plans that promote academic achievement; providing information and resources to support college and career exploration; and assisting with college and scholarship applications. Guidance Counselors also serve as advocates for students and provide crisis intervention when needed.

The Counselor works in partnership with school staff, students, parents, and community resources to ensure all students have the necessary skills to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Responsibilities include providing individual and group counseling, creating and implementing academic, career, and social/emotional programs, assessing student needs, developing individualized counseling plans, consulting with teachers, and connecting students and families with community resources.
