About the Steamfitter role
Steamfitters install, maintain, and repair pipes that carry liquids and gases. They work on heating, cooling, water, and drainage systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
Role Purpose
The purpose of a Steamfitter is to install, maintain, repair, and replace pipes, valves, and fittings used in steam and hot water systems in commercial and industrial settings. Steamfitters are responsible for the installation of new systems, as well as the inspection and maintenance of existing ones. They must be knowledgeable of applicable codes and regulations, as well as safety protocols, and must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose problems. Steamfitters must also be able to read and interpret technical drawings and diagrams, and must have excellent problem-solving and customer service skills.
Steamfitter Summary
Steamfitters are skilled tradespeople who install and maintain high-pressure systems that generate and transport steam for heating, cooling and other industrial applications. Their work involves installing, maintaining and repairing pipes, valves, pumps, heat exchangers and other components of steam systems. They must have a thorough knowledge of the properties of steam and the principles of thermodynamics. They must also be familiar with the use of tools, such as wrenches, saws and soldering irons, and must have excellent problem-solving skills. Steamfitters must adhere to safety regulations and work in accordance with local building codes.
Steamfitter Duties
- Read blueprints and diagrams to determine the type and size of components needed
- Assemble, install and maintain pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems
- Inspect and test installed pipe systems and pipelines
- Cut, thread, bend and install all types of pipe
- Join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings and other methods
- Use of welding and brazing techniques to seal joints
- Repair and replace worn parts
- Keep records of work done
Steamfitter Skills
- Proficiency with tools and equipment used in pipefitting
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams and schematics
- Knowledge of welding and soldering techniques
- Ability to use mathematical formulas to calculate fluid volumes and pressures
