About the Sheet Metal Mechanic role
Sheet metal mechanics install, maintain, and repair sheet metal structures and products. They work with tools such as saws, drills, shears, and press brakes to shape and join metal parts. They must be familiar with welding and soldering, as well as metal fabrication processes. They also must understand and follow safety protocols.
Role Purpose
The purpose of a Sheet Metal Mechanic is to fabricate, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. Sheet Metal Mechanics must understand and be able to interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine the correct layout and installation procedures. They must also be able to use a variety of hand and power tools to cut, shape, assemble, and finish sheet metal products. Sheet Metal Mechanics often work in close collaboration with other tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians.

The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for fabricating, installing, and repairing sheet metal products. The successful candidate must have strong mechanical aptitude and experience with sheet metal tools, including metal shears, brakes, presses, and forming machines. The Sheet Metal Mechanic must also be able to read blueprints and schematics, and have a basic understanding of electrical wiring and HVAC systems. The Sheet Metal Mechanic must be able to safely lift, carry, and maneuver heavy objects and have a valid driver’s license. Sheet Metal Mechanic Duties
- Layout, fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal products from blueprints and/or job orders
- Operate metalworking machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and bending machines
- Smooth metal surfaces using hand tools and power tools
- Install metal roofing, siding and other components
- Construct ductwork and chimney liners
- Fabricate metal parts and details as required
