The purpose of a Sheet Metal Mechanic is to fabricate, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, and furnace casings. Sheet Metal Mechanics must understand and be able to interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine the correct layout and installation procedures. They must also be able to use a variety of hand and power tools to cut, shape, assemble, and finish sheet metal products. Sheet Metal Mechanics often work in close collaboration with other tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians.
