The pipe layer is responsible for installing and maintaining underground pipe systems. This includes laying, connecting, and repairing pipes of various materials such as PVC, ductile iron, cast iron, HDPE, and copper. Pipe layers must also be knowledgeable in reading and interpreting drawings, diagrams, and plans. They must also be able to use hand tools, power tools, and other heavy equipment. In addition, they must have an understanding of safety protocols and the ability to work with a team.
Pipe Layer Duties
- Lay out pipe and accessories according to specifications
- Install and secure pipes with clamps and hangers
- Test pipes for leaks and other issues
- Repair or replace defective pipes
- Install valves, couplings and fittings
Pipe Layer Skills
- Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Lay out and maintain grade
- Construct pipelines of various materials including concrete, clay, HDPE, steel and PVC
