The purpose of an electrician apprentice is to gain experience and knowledge in the field of electrical installation, maintenance, and repair. The apprentice will learn under the guidance of a master electrician, working with them on various projects both in the office and in the field. An apprentice is expected to be able to handle the tools of the trade, handle wiring and electrical systems, and provide excellent customer service. An apprentice should also have a working knowledge of electrical codes and regulations.

Electrician Apprentice Summary

The Electrician Apprentice is responsible for assisting experienced electricians with a variety of tasks and activities related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems. The apprentice will learn the basic principles of electricity and electrical construction, and gain hands-on experience in the field. The Electrician Apprentice will work under the direction of experienced electricians, carrying out a variety of tasks such as reading blueprints, running conduit, installing wiring, connecting switches and outlets, and troubleshooting electrical systems. The apprentice will use a variety of tools and equipment, including wire strippers, conduit benders, and voltmeters. The apprentice will also assist with the maintenance of existing electrical systems, and may be asked to perform other related tasks as needed. The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and must be willing to complete any required apprenticeship training. The Electrician Apprentice must be able to follow instructions, work independently, and have strong problem solving and communication skills.

Electrician Apprentice Duties

  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes
  • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects
