About the Chainman role

They may also be asked to use survey instruments, including theodolites and total stations, to record measurements and angles or to measure and calculate the difference in elevation between two points. Chainmen are also responsible for preparing survey reports and maps, and may be asked to perform other duties, such as helping to set up and operate electronic survey equipment, assisting in the construction of roads, and performing maintenance on survey equipment.
