Auto Body Workers are responsible for repairing, restoring, and refinishing damaged vehicles to their original condition. They use a variety of tools, techniques, and materials to repair dents, scratches, and other damage caused by collisions or general wear and tear. Auto Body Workers may also install or repair parts, such as windshields, door panels, and bumpers. They must possess excellent attention to detail, the ability to work with their hands, and the ability to read and understand technical manuals. The ideal candidate must also possess a valid driver’s license and have a good working knowledge of automotive parts and systems.
Auto Body Worker Duties
- Repair and refinish vehicle bodies, frames, and other automotive structural components
- Remove upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window-and-seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle bodies and fenders
- Weld replacement parts in position, using wrenches and welding equipment
- Fill depressions with body filler, using putty knives
- Remove damaged fenders, panels, and grills, and bolt or weld replacement parts in position
- Align and straighten bent frames and other structural parts, using frame and under-body jacks, and turn-buckles
- Sand and prepare repaired surfaces for refinishing
- Operate soldering equipment and weld replacement parts into place
