About the Costume Designer role
A Costume Designer is responsible for creating and designing costumes for theatre, television, and film productions. They must have a strong understanding of period pieces, be able to research historical garments and fashion, and be able to sketch and create costumes that are both accurate and visually appealing. They must be able to collaborate with directors and actors to produce the desired result.
Role Purpose
The purpose of a Costume Designer is to create the clothing worn by characters in films, television shows, plays, and other theatrical productions. They work closely with Directors, Actors, and Production Designers to ensure that the costumes accurately represent the characters, settings, and time periods in which the production is set. Costume Designers are responsible for researching, creating and sourcing costumes, as well as overseeing their construction, maintenance, and use throughout the production process.
Costume Designer Summary
A Costume Designer is responsible for creating the visual appearance of characters in theatrical, television, and film productions. They create and design clothing, accessories, and hairstyles for actors to wear in order to bring a character to life. The Costume Designer works with the director and other production staff to develop the overall look and feel of the show or film. They create sketches and samples of the costumes, select fabrics and materials, and supervise the construction of the costumes. They also coordinate the ordering of costumes and accessories and maintain a wardrobe budget. Costume Designers must have a great eye for detail and an understanding of the characters they are creating.
Costume Designer Duties
- Design costumes for films, plays, television shows, and other productions
- Collaborate with production staff, directors, and actors to determine artistic vision of the production
- Create sketches, fabric swatches, and sample costumes for approval
- Select fabrics, embellishments, colors, and style for costumes
- Shop for or create accessories, such as jewelry, hats, and shoes
- Fittings, alterations, and adjustments of costumes
- Ensure costumes are ready for production, cleaning and repairing as needed
Costume Designer Skills

Costume Designer Requirements
