Border Patrol Officers are responsible for patrolling and monitoring the borders of the United States. They enforce immigration and customs laws, detect and prevent smuggling and illegal crossings, and respond to other law enforcement needs. To be successful, officers must be highly alert, have physical stamina and endurance, and be able to work independently.
Primary duties include:
• Patrol and monitor the US borders to detect and prevent illegal activities such as smuggling and illegal entry.
• Enforce immigration and customs laws.
• Respond to emergency calls and provide support to other law enforcement agencies.
• Investigate suspicious activities, conduct searches, and apprehend suspects.
• Prepare reports of all activities and submit them to supervisors.
• Maintain a working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing border control.
• Use of surveillance and detection technology, such as ground sensors, cameras, and binoculars.
• Monitor and assess the activities of known criminals.
• Participate in training programs to stay up-to-date on laws, regulations, and new technology.
Border Patrol Officer Duties
- Patrol assigned areas to detect, deter, and apprehend undocumented individuals attempting to cross the border illegally
- Monitor and respond to sensors and other surveillance equipment to detect suspicious activity
- Conduct searches of vehicles and individuals for drugs, weapons, and contraband
- Interview individuals encountered by Border Patrol to determine nationality, purpose of visit, and immigration status
- Process and detain foreign nationals in accordance with immigration laws
- Write reports and maintain records of daily activities and investigations
