About the Ambulance Dispatcher role
An Ambulance Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating emergency medical services by dispatching ambulances to respond to 911 calls and other emergency situations. They monitor activity in their service area, receive information from callers, and ensure that appropriate medical personnel and equipment are dispatched to the scene.
Role Purpose
The purpose of an ambulance dispatcher is to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for medical assistance and to accurately dispatch emergency medical services personnel and equipment. The dispatcher must assess the caller's situation, determine the severity of the emergency, and determine the appropriate response. The dispatcher must then coordinate the appropriate emergency medical services personnel and equipment to the scene of the medical emergency. The dispatcher must also provide medical instructions to the caller, monitor the response team, and manage the radio communication with the responding personnel.

Ambulance Dispatcher Duties
- Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and medical personnel
- Assess callers’ situations and determine the appropriate response, such as sending an ambulance, providing medical advice, or transferring the call to other emergency personnel
- Dispatch ambulances, paramedics, firefighters, and other emergency personnel to the scene of an emergency
- Track ambulances and other emergency vehicles, and update their status in the system
- Maintain contact with on-site medical personnel, providing additional instructions as needed
- Enter and update information in a computer-aided dispatch system
- Provide instructions to callers on how to administer first aid or CPR
- Maintain call logs, records, and other documentation
